16 July, 2013: Ubuntu 13.10: daily image review, XMir broken [or] status of Ubuntu Saucy Salamander [or] How stable is 13.10 [or] Ubuntu 13.10 daily sanity report

Be sure to check out updates as of  25 June, 2013 , 1 July, 2013 and 10 July, 2013 on Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy.

This is a series of updates that I perform in the daily images (or just software updates) of Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander to determine whether the image is sane enough to be installed in a non VM environment. I also do a set of baseline tests to make sure no major regression of usability occurs.
Update on 16 July, 2013
Date Published: 07/16/2013
a) MAJOR break seems to be XMir. It no longer works in my installation. b) Update of Linux Kernel to 3.10.0-2-generic #11. c) UI change to launch dash icon using left click has NOT YET landed.
4 / 5 stars

UPDATE: The issue with XMir is inconsistent now. Out of 3 reboots, I’m hitting the issue once.

Going by the usual test template, after the update I performed the standard set of tests. One major break seems to be that XMir is no more working for me. Scoring launchpad for bugs showed nothing similar to the issue. Hence raised  #1201793 XMir does not work session started with X. Hopefully something comes out of it.

Now for the standard tests and Sanity Results:

Boot UpPASSNone. Now dual booting with Ubuntu 13.04 as selectable option
Unity workflowPASSThe double click to launch workflow kind of feels tiresome.
App InstallPASSInstalled Ubuntu Touch SDK and related Libraries. Went without a glitch. Will post more on it later.
KDE App InstallPASSNone Installed this time.
XMir ActivationFAILFalls back to X anyways with errors in log.

  • XMir fails to boot up
  • No major issues on X
  • App launch on left click has not yet landed.
  • No major performance issues.

Go / No Go on install:

If your main purpose to install Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander is to check out the infamous Mir, you’ll be disappointed with the latest install. Or maybe it’s just my hardware. I wouldn’t bet on it. Otherwise, things seem to run smooth enough for me to perform my daily duties without glitch.
